Romance Details

Romance Details

Yesterday afternoon and evening, I had the good fortune of working with Paul Ernest, David and Luke Edmunson.  My job was simply to assist but it also gave me an opportunity to observe.  Even professionals  do not see everything in the same way.

I noticed the bride's wedding shoes laying on the bed and I suggested to Paul to create a vignette and place the vail close to the shoes as if it could shroud them.  Since I was assisting, all I had was my iPhone to capture the moment.  (As all of you must have ascertained by now, I love to capture details.)

There's some something wonderful about creating art.  It seems like all the time my eyes want to find it.  I truly see most of my compositions as they are.  Who would have thought that my iPhone would become a wonderful tool to render art.  Although, I am not about to give up my large camera, I sure welcome the portability of the iPhone and the spontaneity it affords.  Thank heaven for little iPhones.

The whole world seems so much easier when I have to time to spend in my creative space.  The harshness of the realities that surround me somehow vanish and seem distant.  I truly become raptured by the moment.  It's a true joy that was given to me as a gift, something I will cherish for the rest of my life.

Table Talk

Table Talk

Got bored during my photographer's meeting last night, there was a little too much table talk going on for me. I'm the type of person that needs to be either working on deals or creating something. Just as I was begining to feel guilty, I noticed a very famous photographer sitting at the next table doing exactly the same thing, fidgeting and shooting with his iPhone. This must be a common trait among creative people.

The speaker had some interesting points but I truthfully am not interested in taking a lifetime of images of children. Thats just not me. I prefer creating abstract images from simple details. Actually, I thrive on details. I love details and see them everywhere.

Archival Memories

Someone's Special Day

Just Details
Photography has never been about just taking the shot.  To me, the art of photography lies in archiving the details of the moment.  The photographer interprets what his senses witness.  The print is the testimony of what he saw according to his perspective.  As such, it is not necessarily meant to be factual.

Chocolate Temptations
The world that we sense is at times more interesting than the factual.  We are constantly deluged by facts each day.  The advent of the internet compounds the overload.  Many times we are left numb by the facts and void of feeling.  A full life requires the use of all of our senses.

Some photographers take perfect technically sound images.  Unfortunately, we never gain any insight as to why the photographer took the image to begin with.  What was his motivation?  Without motivation images are really no more than Xerox copies, flat without passion and void of emotion.

I Brake For Details

Puerta:  Casa Lajas

I don't know if it was my mother's garment industry background or if it's just my OCD nature, but since I was a child, I've always noticed the details.  This fascination serves me well as I spend time behind the view finder.  The whole simply is not as interesting to me as the details that make up the whole.

There's so much to notice in the details.  So much is obscured by looking at the whole.  The beauty is in the interrelationship between the detail and how it composes the whole.  The details are the links that make the picture complete.  There's no devil in the details.

The details provide us not only with colors, but also with textures and contrasts that make the image appealing.  As we observe the details, we notice what makes that image truly unique.  We begin to comprehend why we are/were drawn to it.  The details are the soul of the image.  If we learn to manipulate the details, we can change the emotion of the image.  Details provide the depth or the added dimensions required to feel the image.

It's funny while I might not remember names, I certainly can recall the details about objects and people.  I will recall facial characteristics, birthmarks, quirks, and shoes.  More importantly, I notice how they are and observe how they think.      An image begins to form in my head.  Then again, I am a photographer, I am supposed to notice the details.

You will be surprised what you will notice if you only take the time to observe.  Add another dimension to your life.  Pay attention to what is happening all around you.  Open up your eyes and you will be surprised at what your soul will find and embrace.  A change of attitude and perspective will definitely follow.
